Reunification Program

The Decatur Correctional Center's innovative Reunification Program allows women who meet certain eligibility requirements to live together on a separate housing unit where they visit with their children in a more home-type environment. The housing unit dedicated to this program has been decorated with children in mind. A variety of toys and educational materials are available for children of all ages. This environment allows the women to get more involved in interacting with their children than what is possible in the visiting room. Visits may take place 7 days a week and may last all day, longer than ordinary visits in the visiting room. Through these visits, and other specialized programming provided to participants, the goal of improving the emotional health of both mothers and their children is being met. All visits are documented and evaluated by staff and the progress of program participants is reviewed on a regular basis.
